Starting in August 2017, ALL medication will need to be dropped off AND picked up by a parent/guardian. I will no longer send ANY medication home in bookbags with students. This will be in affect as of the first day of school, so please make sure you personally deliver your child's medication to me or the front office. Thank you in advance for your full cooperation.
Hey everyone! The ticks are coming out in full force right now! I have removed 3 from students just this week. Ticks like to hide in crevices (behind ears, belly button, and even our private sensitive areas!) and in our hair. Please make sure to thoroughly check your child everyday for ticks. It only take s few minutes to do this, but can save your child from a lot of pain in the future. Above is an example of what a tick looks like before it has latched or not long after latching to our skin. Below is an example of an engorged tick that has fed for some time. When removing a tick, use tweezers, not your fingers to do so. Grab the tick at his head and pull straight upwards. Be sure to remove the entire tick and do not leave his head attached to the skin. Some, not all, ticks are carriers of Lyme's Disease. This can leave lasting effects and damage to our organs and joints. After removing the tick, monitor the area for several days. If the tick was a carrier of Lyme's Disease a red "bulls eye" ring will form around the bite. This can take 1-2 days or upwards of a week to become apparent. So please continue to be diligent about checking the area. Especially if it is in the hair where it is easily hidden and forgotten. Below is an example of the "bulls eye" rash that will appear. If you see this, make a doctors appointment immediately. You will need a blood test and antibiotic treatment. Ticks are more prevalent in wooded areas but can also be found in pinestraw and mulch. They are easily contracted and easily looked over once on our bodies. Be diligent when looking for these little creatures!!
In the past 2 weeks, I have seen a large number of lice cases in the school. They are spread out to all grades. If there has been a positive lice case in a classroom in the last two weeks, I have checked that entire class for lice.
Please continue to check your child's hair for lice and nits (lice eggs) often. I also ask that you let me know if you find and treat for lice so that I can notify the other parents in the class to also check their children. I want to ensure you that we are being diligent to stop the spread and educate the kids about lice. It is going to be super cold the next few days, so please make sure that you send your children dressed appropriately and with a coat.
There is a huge collections of jackets in the lost and found!! Please come and look for your kids lost items! And always right your child's name in their belongings. Happy Spring! This may be my favorite time of year! We survived the bitterly cold winter, and now we can open the windows and soak in the sun!
A few things to remember this Spring: -Dress your kids in layers so they can be warm in the cool mornings and cool in the warm afternoons! -Increase the number of baths you your kids get during the week. Pollen can cling to our skin and hair, so we need to make sure we are washing it all down the drain! Also, bathing at night can keep the pollen from bothering us at night while we sleep. ( This goes for pets too!!) -Watch out for bees, wasps, mosquitoes and ants!! All those youngins' out there with allergies to insects may need a refresher on what to look for in order to avoid their allergen. It would also be a good idea, to give them a tutorial on how to use their Epi-Pen. And if you, need a refresher, come see me and I will be happy to show you the proper technique! Also, carry Benedryl with you to the park and ALWAYS keep some handy at home! -I see a lot of dry, itchy, red eyes this time of year in my clinic. Saline eye drops can be very helpful in washing away unwanted allergens in our eyes. Y'all have a great Spring!! I found this article today about the sugar content in all of our foods that we think are "healthy". Make sure to check the sugar content in all packaged foods! Companies slide it in there, then label it "low-fat" or "organic" to suck us in.
