The 5th grade had a great time yesterday afternoon as Hannah Jones, RN, MSN from Hamilton Medical Center taught them how to identify the signs and symptoms of a stroke. They are now able to react appropriately if they think someone is experiencing any the symptoms! Thank you Hannah Jones and Brandy Salazar for coming to teach our kids!

Meet my sweet baby girl Charlotte Reese Cook. We call her Charley. She was born on July 21st. She is more perfect than I could have ever imagined!
It was tough leaving her at daycare, but it is also good to be back here at Brookwood. I returned from maternity leave last Wednesday. And everyone made it much easier with their hugs, flowers, goodies and signs. I have said it before, but I am so blessed to work in such a positive and supportive environment. It is that time of year again...CRCT! The kids and teachers have been preparing all year long and now is the time to test their knowledge. I know you will all do fabulous. We have such smart and motivated kids here at Brookwood! I know you can do it!! Go to bed early, eat a healthy and filling breakfast and breathe!!
The 2nd grade had an exciting morning! We had lots of fantastic volunteers and staff come in and help with the health fair today. It was a total success!! The kids can't stop talking about everything they learned and how much fun they had. The kids learned about CPR, dental care, exercise, nutrition and spinal cord/brain safety. Congratulations to Kursten Ware for winning the 'Hula Hoop for the Heart Contest'! I think that girl could have hula-hooped all day long if we would have let her keep going. A special thanks to Beverly Green from the Health Department, Suzanne Brown, Hamilton Medical Center, American Heart Association of Chattanooga, Paul Weaver, Steve Holmes ,Cynthia Hoeng, Anna Verhoeff, and Carmen Flamini for volunteering your time this morning. You are all very much appreciated! Beverely Green the District Dental Hygenist from the Health Department came and delivered a very educational and fun presentation on dental care. A few lucky volunteers got to pretend to be teeth and they got flossed!
Recently, I have made it a point, to glance around a restaurant when I am there and take a look at what the kids are drinking. I was not surprised when almost half of the kids that I observed were drinking soda! And not the kiddie sized either, the adult sized drinks! After seeing this, I asked myself what I drank as a kid. I rarely remember drinking coke or soda but I do remember only drinking sweet tea. And I am from Georgia, so when I say sweet...I mean SWEET! 2 cups of sugar per gallon!. It was like syrup. It was delicious...anyway...Kids want sugar! They want sugar, caffeine and carbonation. All three can be so harmful to kids and adults! The sugar causes obesity and fatique, the caffeine can be detramental to their little hearts and the carbonation is rotting their teeth! So why as parents, do we give this to our kids knowing how bad it can be? Because we love them and want to make them happy?...well...this doesn't really make sense. We do love our kids, so we need to show a little tough love sometimes and say No. No, you cannot have a Dr.Pepper with dinner, how about water or juice.
And I can here everyone now saying, well, juice has lots of sugar! Yes, it does, but most of it is natural sugar which works much more in sync with our bodies. You can also buy juices with 50% less sugar now (Motts for Tots, Tropicana 50) or water it down. And don't get sucked in by Powerade and Gatorade either! Their commercials make them seem so healthy! I mean, pro athletes drink it..right?! Sports drinks have alot of sugar in them also. You should only drink a sports drink when you are sweating and exercising vigorously, as pro athletes do on a regular basis. Us and our kids, probably don't do that very often, therefore...don't drink them or water them down so the sugar content is cut in half. We need to set a good example for our kiddos. You don't order the coke or Dr.Pepper. Get a water. They will follow your example. Click here to see a great chart that shows you the sugar content is popular drinks. I am thankful to be in a school where approximately 98% of our school population is vaccinated. This brings ease to many parents minds. Especially the parents of immunocompromised children (Brookwood has immunocompromised children). These kids are unable to be vaccinated due to an illness and/or treatment (Chemotherapy). These kids rely on Herd Immunity to protect them. Without herd immunity, these kids run the risk of diseases that could turn deadly including Measels, Mumps and even Chicken Pox.
Below is a link to an article. Please read and make wise decisions! http://iacknowledge.net/due-to-the-growing-anti-vaccine-movement-u-s-measles-cases-have-tripled-this-year/ I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. We are smack dab in the middle of the holiday season. We have already made it past the feast of turkey and dressing, now onto the ham and santa cookies!! Here are some tips to avoid over stuffing your plates and feeling miserable!! -Use a smaller plate. Don't grab the platter, go for a salad plate. This will limit the amount of food you put onto your plate at one time. I bet you will be full when it is empty:) -Don't get a biscuit. I know, this seems like an impossible task ( I love bread!!) But not getting it will make you feel better afterwards, I promise. -Drink water with your meal instead of sweet tea. I know we live in the south but you can do it! -Dessert...Oh how I love dessert...But we must have restraint. I know Aunt Rosie makes the best pecan pie with homemade whip cream and Cousin Alma bakes a killer cheesecake, BUT.....do we really need 2 pieces of each? No, we don't. Get small slivers of dessert. This way you satisfy your sweet tooth without overstuffing yourself. -All of these rules also apply to our kids. If we don't set a good example for them , how are they suppose to know the right way to do things? Now to only practice what I preach.... I know that string cheese is a frequent snack and great for lunches but please take a look at this, then go check your cheese!!

I get hugs and smiles from the moment I walk in the door until I walk out. These kids are so wonderful and I love each one. And the teachers and staff work their tails off to teach the kids as much as possible in an interactive way.
I am so blessed that this position opened at exactly the right time for me last year. Thank you Brookwood for being great in so many ways! |
