Today at Brookwood we began a school-wide science experiment. Every class tested a different surface here at the school. Some examples of these surfaces include the bathroom floor, the handle of the door on the front entrance, phones, keyboards, the bottom of shoes, and many more! We will be observing the petri dishes for 2 weeks, then they will be displayed in the STEM lab for viewing. Hopefully everyone will get to see something grow!! Pictures to come!

Yesterday we had a huge blessing! MacKinley has returned to school cancer free! She was diagnosed with Burkett's Lymphoma this summer. She battled like a champ and kicked cancer's butt!! So proud of her and so glad that she is back! We all wore hats to honor her and her bravery.
I just wanted to share this article with yall. Please read it and encourage anyone who is not vaccinated to go to their physician or the health department. Measles is not something we want to see our kiddos suffer through.

They set off on a journey today to explore the different areas of the war. Volunteers came to the school to teach them about this important time in American history. So I pitched in and taught them a little about nursing and the medical field during that time. It was a blast and I learned some interesting things along with the kids! At the end of my lesson, we played a little with the bandages and pretended we were on the battlefield! I had a blast!!
It's coming!! The FLU!!!! Yes, it is still August and alot of us are still in summer mode despite this horrible rainy weather. But we have to face the truth, that it is almost fall and that means flu season. Please be smart and get a flu vaccine! Some people say they don't work, others say that they will get the flu from the flu shot but the truth is that the flu vaccine is our best defense against this horrible illness. Lets keep ourselves and our kiddos healthy and happy! GET A FLU VACCINE!! While I am on this topic, I will talk a little about TDaP vaccine. This is a vaccine that protects against Tetanus, Diptheria and Pertussis (Whooping Cough). This is a one time vaccine that I recommend for EVERYONE! But it is especially important if you are pregnant, a parent, grandparent or are around infants/small children. So that pretty much encompasses everyone that would be reading this post. Pertussis is on the rise in infants and youngins'. They get this horrific illness from us! The adults that take care of them and love them carry the whooping cough inside their bodies, and we pass it along to them. Let's protect our kiddos and get TDaP! Here we are again! This starts my second year here at Brookwood, and I couldn't be more excited! It is so great to see faces that I recognize and fresh ones that I will soon meet.
As we start a new year, there are a few things I want you kids and parents to keep in mind. 1. To get a good start, you need fuel at the beginning of the day. Breakfast is so important! It gets your body and brain ready to go and fueled up for a long day at school. 2. We are already seeing alot of sore throats and coughs. Please drink plenty of water throughout the day and get plenty of rest at night. 3. Please make sure to check with your teachers about kids with food allergies and other conditions in your classroom. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at anytime throughout the day or check out my page on food allergy information! I hope everyone is loving their new teachers and classrooms! It is going to be a great year! Once again this morning, the school was greeted by enthusiastic kids handing out sun safety tips! Today is hat day!! I have already seen some really great hats! The skin on our face is very sensitive, so we must protect it the best we can. Sunscreen and a large brimmed hat will do the trick! If you decide to wear a ball cap or a visor, don't forget to put sunscreen on your ears!! Hooray for a little sun today!!! I think the rain is over! At least for a little while. Enjoy the sunshine while you can. Just make sure you enjoy it safely!! HAPPY SUN SAFETY WEEK! This week at Brookwood, we are learning about how to protect our bodies from the harmful rays of the sun. A special thank you goes out to the The Healthy Club! They will be handing out tips in the morning to everyone who comes in the front doors. You will also hear their lively voices on the announcements this week giving out tips! Everyone looks so great in their sunglasses today! Our skin is not the only part of our bodies that we must protect from the sun. Our eyes also need to be covered at all times when outside in the bright sun. Without sunglasses, we can get headaches, feel dizzy or even decrease our ability to see well over time. The rainy weather outside won't keep us down! We need to learn to be sun safe before summer time is here! For the last few days here at Brookwood, the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders have been taking the CRCT. This can be such a stressful time! "What if I don't pass?", "What if I have to go to the bathroom during the test?", "What if I run out of time?". These are all questions that are running through their/your heads. RELAX!!! YOU WILL DO GREAT! You and your teachers have been working so hard this year. You have the knowledge in your head, it is now time to apply it!! Get a good night's sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, wear comfy clothes and turn your brain on to FULL POWER!!!! YOU GOT THIS!!!!!!!! |
